SyrCOM encourages others to design Syriac fonts. The fonts in this collection are all derived from template fonts designed by Paul Nelson and George Kiraz. These templates specify a standard of an architecture of Unicode-based OpenType Syriac fonts, and are available for those who wish to design fonts according to this standard.

Font developers who use the templates may chose to distribute their fonts as part of the SyrCOM collection. There are many advantages to doing so:

  • SyrCOM has a wide distribution.
  • SyrCOM will review the font for quality assurance. (If the font has to be edited by a specialist, the font designer is responsible for raising the necessary funds.)
  • SyrCOM makes sure that the font naming does not conflict with other SyrCOM-approved fonts.
  • SyrCOM will provide a digital signiture for the font, ensuring that its authership cannot be tampered with.

Users who modify existing SyrCOM fonts for their private use may not distribute their revisions, neither free nor for a free.

A template font and documentation will be posted in early 2001. For now, to obtain the template fonts, please send a email to George Kiraz at gkiraz@DirecPC.com.
