Project Meltho is directed by George A. Kiraz.

Much work preceded the actual design of the fonts. In 1998, Paul Nelson, George Kiraz and Sargon Hasso put forward a propsal to add Syriac to The Unicode Standard. This was a prerequisite to have Syriac support in Windows 2000 Professional. The Proposal was accepted in 1998 by the Unicode Constortium, and in 2000 by the International Standard Organizing. Syriac became part of Unicode 3.0 in 2000.

The fonts in this collection are all derived from template fonts designed by Paul Nelson and George Kiraz. These templates specify a standard of an architecture of Unicode-based OpenType Syriac fonts, and are available for those who wish to design fonts according to this standard on the Font Developers Page.

Each font gives the credits for its designer(s). To see these credits, double click on the font in question.
